The word serif came from ancient Rome. The world serif comes from the Dutch word schreef, meaning wrote. A serif is a flare at the end of a letter terminal There are two main types of serifs: Adnate and Abrupt. The adnate serif is more organic and the abrupt serif or squarer and more rigid. The abrupt letters don't flow into the base letter form. In Japanese it is translated to uruko, which means fish scales, when translated into English it means "forms made with legs"
