Vocabulary

Target audience- a specific group of people within the target of the product of design.

Message- the point you're trying to get across

Work ethic- a set of value that with you give you the best possible work

Employ ability skills- the basic skills necessary for getting, keeping and doing well on a job

20/20 rule- you should look away from the computer for a few seconds to let your eyes rest if you've been at the computer for a long time.

Right to know laws- the hazards the are exposed in the work place, this law makes you aware makes you aware of these and provides you with information to keep you save

Icon- a representation used by picture and images.

Vector based graphics- use of geometrical primitives such as points or curves

Specification of a project- The guidelines you have to follow for the project.

Dialogue box- a type of window used to enable reciprocal communication

Palette- the set of colors of tools given to you in a program.

Guidelines-  a set of rules on how to behave in a situation

Extensions- a part that is added to something to enlarge or prolong it. 

Contextual menu- a short cut or pop up menu (right clicking)

Clipping mask- object whose shape masks other artwork so that only areas that lie within the shape are visible


Hue- a shade of a color

Primary colors-  red, blue, yellow


Secondary colors- color made from mixing two primary colors


Tertiary colors- combination of primary and secondary colors

Neutral colors- colors that aren't on the color wheel. Black, gray, brown, white.

Continuous tone image- where each color goes to a different tone.

Resolution- used for pixel count in digital imaging and helps you count all the pixels in a single image.

File size- amount of space that is taken up on a file.

Typography- art of expressing ideas through the selection of typefaces

Typeface-  a visual symbol that make up an image or a design.


Serif- a smaller line used to finish of the main stroke up a letter. at the top or bottom of a character.


Body type- Type size ranging from 4 point to three point.


Display type- Type sizes around 12. used to get attention.


Reverse type- white type on a darker color background.


Point size- used to identify the size of typeface.

Ligatures- where two or more graphemes are joined at a single glyph

Ampersand- the symbol in Latin that means and.

Small caps- set at the same height and weight of surrounding lower case letters

Lower case- minuscule or small letters.

Upper case- capital letters.

Flush left- all the text is aligned to the left

Flush right- text is aligned to the right.

Centered- Type is aligned to the center (very formal)

Justified- aligned on the left and on the right.

Lining- numbers that have a uniform height.


Non lining- They don't line up, have sum ascenders and descenders. (similar to old style)

leading- the space in between lines of type. 

Margins- the white space around the edges of your document. (in in design the margins let you know where to put important things)

Kerning- adjusting the space in between individual characters.

Tracking- allows you to adjust spacing of characters as a whole.


concept-an idea; something formed in one's mind.


Final product- end result; how me ultimately communicate to our audience


thumbnail- a quick sketch to get thoughts out of your mind and onto paper.

Initial cap- Larger decorative capital letters at the beginning of text or paragraph.
