The right use of color can do what?

How do we see color if objects "have no color of their own"?
when the absorb or reflect colors

Within the electromagnetic spectrum, which waves allow us to see color?
visible light

white light?
equal parts of all colors in visible spectrum

What is a glass prism?
transparent triangular object that breaks white light into all colors of the visible light spectrum

What seven colors result when white light is refracted through a prism?
red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.

Describe hue?
the color itself

When does white light occur?
when all the wave lengths are reflected back to your eye.

When does black light occur?
no light is reflected back to your eye

How color is perceived depends on what?
type of light that it is seen in

What is a color wheel?
visual tool that shows the relationship between primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.

What are primary colors? Name them?
red, blue, yellow

What are secondary colors? Name them?
2 primary colors mixed together; orange, green, purple.

What are tertiary colors? Name them?
Primary color and a secondary color mixed together. red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow--green, blue-green, blue-violet, red-violet

What are neutral colors? How can they be created?
colors of very slow saturation. mixing complimentary colors.

How can a neutral color help a design?
put focus on other colors, or tone down other colors

What are complementary colors? Name them?
Colors positioned opposite of each other on the color wheel. red and green, orange and blue, yellow and violet

What is color value?
lightness or darkness of a hue

What is a shade?
adding black to a hue

What is a tint?
adding white to a hue

What is saturation/intensity?
brightness of a color

What happens when you mix complementary colors together?
You produce a dull tone

Describe color harmony?
Pleasing arrangement of parts, helps create visual interest and sense of order.

What is a color scheme?
Harmonious color combinations used to create style and appeal

Describe a monochromatic color scheme?
Uses tints and shades of one color

Describe an analogous color scheme?
Uses three colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel.

Describe a complementary color scheme?
two colors opposite of each other on the color wheel

Describe a split-complementary color scheme?
Uses three colors, One color-two adjacent to its compliment

Describe a triadic color scheme?
Uses three colors equally spaced around the color wheel.

What colors are considered to be warm colors?
Red, orange, yellow

Describe a warm color scheme?
Express aggression, excitement and danger; strong and welcoming. Bold and energetic

What colors are considered to be cool colors?
Green, blue, violet

Describe a cool color scheme?
Gives an impression of calm. Illusion of depth

Why is important to consider which colors are being used within a design?
The right color choice can help convey the right message
